For those of you that don't know anything about it

"The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle accelerator complex intended to collide opposing beams of 7 TeV protons. Its main purpose is to explore the validity and limitations of the Standard Model, the current theoretical picture for particle physics. This model is known to break down at a certain high energy level.
When activated, it is theorized that the collider will produce the elusive Higgs boson, the observation of which could confirm the predictions and "missing links" in the Standard Model of physics and could explain how other elementary particles acquire properties such as mass.[3][1] The verification of the existence of the Higgs boson would be a significant step in the search for a Grand Unified Theory, which seeks to unify three of the four known fundamental forces: electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force, leaving out only gravity. The Higgs boson may also help to explain why gravitation is so weak compared to the other three forces. In addition to the Higgs boson, other theorized novel particles that might be produced, and for which searches[4] are planned, include strangelets, micro black holes, magnetic monopoles and supersymmetric particles.[5]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

The LHC is supposed to be active in a few months, recently CERN was able to lower it to 1.9 K (-271C; -456F). http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7512586.stm

What we can learn from this will be huge.

Use this topic to discuss anything LHC related.

^^ Ignore the above post, this is the true purpose of the LHC.

Not really

Damn you fool, this was all a plot by the EAC(Evil Atheist Conspiracy) and only gorilla199 had the brilliance to figure it out.

Also, that guy talks about how the Freemasons are in on this, but Freemasons are religious and why would they want to prove a "God" particle that according to this guy, disproves God?

I actually worked on this, under Dr Richard Jones at UCONN. Fun shit.

And, yes, micro black holes will gobble up the earth and we're all part of an evil conspiracy. :p

Because we all know how stable micro-holes are... [/nurd]

Completely stable? : P

A side note, I love how all of CERN's videos make them seem like some evil technological research facility from DOOM or something.

Could a micro hole even be created outside of a vacuum? From my understanding, black holes are superdense clumps of matter that destroy subatomic particles by stretching the hell out of them. The thing is, they need to be superdense to begin with, and osmosis would take care of that in picoseconds or femtoseconds, no?

I believe you are correct. On a LHC note, a few weeks ago final testing went off without a hitch.
